Deck, Patio & Outdoor Living Lighting in Portland, OR
In Portland, an unlit patio is a summer-only space. Sunset is before 4:30 in December and barely past 8:30 in July, which means for most of the year the deck you invested in sits dark and unused by dinnertime. PDX Outdoor Lighting designs lighting for decks, patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, and fire-pit areas across the metro so those rooms stay comfortable and usable long after the light goes.
Outdoor living spaces need layers, not a single bright source. We combine soft downlighting from pergola beams, eaves, or nearby trees for general illumination; recessed rail, post, and step lights for safe circulation; and focused task lighting where you actually cook, serve, and grill. Getting the layers right is what lets one space work for a quiet evening with two people and for a dinner with twelve — and dimming and zoning let you move between them without rewiring anything.

What Our Clients Say
“Other quotes were a fixture count on paper. These guys walked the yard, explained what each light was doing and why, and the plan matched what we got.”
Landscape & Garden Lighting
Mark R.
Lake Oswego
“Our 1912 Craftsman vanished after dark. They lit the columns and the gable and left everything between them dark. The contrast is the whole thing.”
Architectural & Facade Lighting
Jennifer L.
Irvington, Portland
“Steep lot, and the walk down was dangerous in the wet. Staggered path lights plus lights in the step risers — fewer fixtures than we were quoted elsewhere, better result.”
Path & Walkway Lighting
David S.
West Linn
“Half our system had been dark for two years. They found it in twenty minutes — corroded connectors — and told me the transformer was fine. Could have sold me a new one.”

Downlighting from above is the technique that does the most work here. A fixture mounted in a pergola beam or up in a nearby Douglas fir, aimed down through the branches, throws a soft dappled light across a patio that feels like moonlight rather than a fixture pointed at people. It illuminates the space without putting anything in anyone's eyes, and it's the single biggest difference between a patio that feels like a room and one that feels like a lit parking spot.

More About Our Deck, Patio & Outdoor Living Lighting Work
The best outdoor rooms borrow light from the landscape around them. A patio lit only from within feels like a stage with a black curtain behind it — the eye hits a wall of darkness at the edge of the pavers and the space feels small. Lighting a tree, a fence line, or a planting bed twenty feet beyond the patio pushes that boundary outward and makes the whole yard feel like part of the room. It's the cheapest way to make a small space feel considerably larger.
We light decks, patios, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens throughout Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Happy Valley, Beaverton, and the surrounding metro. Contact PDX Outdoor Lighting for a free design consultation.
Our Process
How We Work
Free Design Consultation
We walk your property with you, talk through what you want the space to feel like after dark, and note the trees, architecture, and pathways worth lighting — no pressure, no obligation.
Your Lighting Plan
We put the design on paper fixture by fixture — what gets lit, from where, with which beam spread — and price it as a fixed proposal. Nothing is ordered and no deposit is taken until you've approved it.
Clean, Low-Voltage Install
Our crews hand-dig and tuck 12-volt cable below grade, set transformers discreetly, and mount solid brass and copper fixtures — with your lawn and beds left the way we found them.
Night Aiming & Ongoing Care
We return after dark to aim every fixture by eye, set your timer or app schedule, and walk the finished system with you — then keep it dialed in with optional annual maintenance.
