Smart Lighting & Controls in Portland, OR

Control is what turns a lighting installation into a system you actually use. PDX Outdoor Lighting installs smart, app-controlled outdoor lighting across the Portland metro — Wi-Fi transformers, zoned circuits, saved scenes, dimming, astronomic scheduling, and full-color RGBW fixtures where you want the option to change the mood or mark an occasion.

The everyday value is in zoning and scenes rather than color. Zoning lets the front architectural lighting, the path lights, the back patio, and the garden run independently instead of all-on or all-off. Scenes save combinations you actually use — a low, warm 'Evening' scene, a brighter 'Entertaining' scene for the patio, a minimal 'Late' scene that leaves only the path and entry lit after midnight. Once those exist, people use their lighting far more than they did with a single dusk-to-dawn timer.

What Our Clients Say

June 2026
Other quotes were a fixture count on paper. These guys walked the yard, explained what each light was doing and why, and the plan matched what we got.

Lake Oswego

May 2026
Our 1912 Craftsman vanished after dark. They lit the columns and the gable and left everything between them dark. The contrast is the whole thing.

Architectural & Facade Lighting

Steep lot, and the walk down was dangerous in the wet. Staggered path lights plus lights in the step risers — fewer fixtures than we were quoted elsewhere, better result.

Path & Walkway Lighting

Half our system had been dark for two years. They found it in twenty minutes — corroded connectors — and told me the transformer was fine. Could have sold me a new one.

Astronomic scheduling is the quietly important piece in Portland. Sunset here swings from about 4:27 in early December to nearly 9:03 in late June — a spread of more than four and a half hours. A fixed clock timer is wrong most of the year and needs constant resetting. A smart transformer tracks true sunset and sunrise for your actual location and adjusts itself daily, so the lights come on when it gets dark and shut off at the hour you chose, every night, without you touching anything.

More About Our Smart Lighting & Controls Work

Dimming deserves more credit than it gets. Landscape lighting commissioned at full output is frequently a little bright for ordinary evenings once the system is lived with, and being able to pull the whole yard back to sixty percent transforms how it feels — softer, more even, more atmospheric, and easier on the eyes from inside the house looking out. It also extends fixture life and cuts energy use. We set initial dim levels at final aiming and leave you able to adjust them whenever.

We install smart outdoor lighting and controls throughout Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Happy Valley, Beaverton, and the surrounding metro — both as part of new systems and as upgrades to existing ones. Contact PDX Outdoor Lighting to talk through options.

Our Process

How We Work

Step 1

Free Design Consultation

We walk your property with you, talk through what you want the space to feel like after dark, and note the trees, architecture, and pathways worth lighting — no pressure, no obligation.

Step 2

Your Lighting Plan

We put the design on paper fixture by fixture — what gets lit, from where, with which beam spread — and price it as a fixed proposal. Nothing is ordered and no deposit is taken until you've approved it.

Step 3

Clean, Low-Voltage Install

Our crews hand-dig and tuck 12-volt cable below grade, set transformers discreetly, and mount solid brass and copper fixtures — with your lawn and beds left the way we found them.

Step 4

Night Aiming & Ongoing Care

We return after dark to aim every fixture by eye, set your timer or app schedule, and walk the finished system with you — then keep it dialed in with optional annual maintenance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I actually control from the app?
On/off and dimming per zone, saved scenes, schedules tied to sunset and sunrise, vacation and away modes, and — on RGBW fixtures — color. You can also run it manually from anywhere, which is genuinely useful when you're arriving home late or you're away and want the property to look occupied.
Do color-changing lights look tacky?
Only if you use them that way. Most of our clients run warm white the vast majority of the year and use color a handful of times — team colors during a game, orange at Halloween, red and green in December, pastels in spring. The system defaults to warm white; color is a capability sitting behind it, not the everyday setting.
Can smart lighting be added to my existing system?
Often, yes. Swapping a standard transformer for a smart one is straightforward and immediately gives you app control and astronomic scheduling for everything already wired to it. Adding true zoning or per-fixture color depends on how the existing cable is run — we'll check and tell you what's practical.
Does it work with Alexa, Google Home, or HomeKit?
Most of the smart transformer platforms we install integrate with the major voice assistants, and many work alongside broader home automation systems. We'll match the platform to whatever ecosystem you already use rather than adding a second app you'll forget about.
What happens if the Wi-Fi goes down?
The lights keep running. Schedules are stored on the transformer itself, not in the cloud, so an internet outage means you temporarily lose app control while everything continues to turn on and off exactly as programmed. Manual override at the transformer is always available.
