Getting Your Outdoor Lighting Ready for Portland's Dark Season

Portland's daylight swings hard. Late June gives you sunset just after 9pm; early December bottoms out at 4:27 in the afternoon. For four months, you arrive home in the dark, and your outdoor lighting stops being decorative and starts being infrastructure. Here's a short autumn checklist.

Clean the Lenses

A season of pollen, dust, mineral deposits, and Northwest moss meaningfully cuts output — often by more than people believe until they see a cleaned fixture next to a dirty one. Warm water, a soft cloth, and a few minutes per fixture restores a surprising amount of brightness.

Cut Back the Growth

Plants put on remarkable growth in a Portland summer, and fixtures that were clear in May are frequently buried by September. Walk the system after dark and look for lights that are now shining into the back of a shrub. Trim around them, or have fixtures repositioned to suit how the bed has actually filled in.

Re-Aim What Has Drifted

Mowers, trimmers, dogs, kids, and settling soil move fixtures a few degrees at a time. A yard where every fixture is a little off looks subtly wrong in a way that's hard to identify. Re-aiming after dark is the single highest-value hour you can spend on an existing system.

Check the Timer — or Upgrade It

If you're on a fixed clock timer, autumn is when it goes badly out of step, because sunset moves so fast through September and October. Look for Dark Spots

Walk the whole property at night and note anything out. A single fixture is usually a lamp; a group going dark together usually means a failed connector upstream. Either way, it's much easier to get fixed in October than in a January downpour.

Prioritize the Approach

If you only fix a few things, fix the path from where you park to your front door. Wet leaves, moss on steps, and December darkness are how people actually get hurt on their own property.
